Córdoba in May: Patios Festival or Feria?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 4 min read
The answer first
Choose the Patios Festival for private courtyards, flowers and daytime neighbourhood walks. Choose the Feria de Nuestra Señora de la Salud for a large fairground, open casetas, music and late nights. They are different events at different points in May, not two names for the same celebration. If you want both, plan a longer stay or accept a gap between them.
The Patios Festival
During the municipal competition, participating residents open decorated courtyards that are normally private. In 2026 the festival ran from 4 to 17 May, and it usually falls in the first half of the month. The city publishes a fresh map and programme for each edition; use that year’s document because participating patios and visiting arrangements can change.
Entry to competition courtyards is free, but free does not mean queue-free. These are small homes with limited capacity. Go early in the morning session, choose one area rather than crossing the city repeatedly and leave space for residents and the people waiting behind you. Ask before taking close photographs of people or domestic rooms.
A guided patio walk is useful for understanding why the architecture, wells, shade and planting differ between neighbourhoods. It also gives structure when the map feels overwhelming. It does not provide private priority access unless the booking description explicitly says so.
The Feria
The Feria takes place at El Arenal beside the Guadalquivir, not in the patio districts. In 2026 the fair ran from 23 to 30 May, with the fairground lit up the night before, and it usually closes out the month. Expect a broad fairground with casetas, rides, food, horses during designated hours and activity well into the evening.
Unlike invitation-only fairs elsewhere, Córdoba is known for casetas with open doors, but individual venues still set their own atmosphere and capacity. The fair suits travellers who want nightlife and a large public celebration. It is a poor substitute for the patios if your main interest is architecture and gardens.
Crowds, heat and accommodation
May is one of Córdoba’s busiest periods. Reserve accommodation and fixed-entry monuments before arrival. Keep the hottest middle hours lighter: patio visits involve standing in queues, while the fair becomes livelier later. Comfortable shoes matter on cobbles and across the extensive fairground.
Do not schedule the Mosque-Cathedral, several patio routes and the Feria in one continuous day. A quieter plan pairs one morning monument with one patio district, a proper afternoon break and an evening event.
Which week should you choose?
Pick the first half of May for patios. Pick the end of the month for the Feria. Outside the competition, some patios can still be visited through year-round venues and tours, but the citywide opening of private homes is the special element of the festival.
Our recommendation
For a first cultural visit, prioritise the Patios Festival and book a guided walk only if you want interpretation or help choosing a route. Choose the Feria instead when your priority is music, social atmosphere and late evenings. Check the official city calendar for the year you travel before booking transport.
